I have been to Italy and it is indeed a very romantic destination. This was the first location we thought of for a honeymoon. Just realize that you may want to be out sightseeing a lot and you may not make as much time for relaxation. Ultimately, we decided not to go to Europe because we know we will need time to relax after the wedding and we knew that we would be trying to cram it all in. But that doesn't mean it's not right for you. It just depends what you want out of your trip. And depends how you plan it.
Food is on the expensive side from my experience. Partly had to do with the exchange rate. I remember one time going to a restaurant and thinking I would easily find something on the menu...but I hardly recognized any names of the dishes. Not quite the same as Italian food as we know it in the US. Delicious though. For lodging, you could cut costs by staying in youth hostels or in church guest houses. Maybe book a cruise like the other person said or something that you could get all inclusive so you know what you are paying up front.
Good luck! If it's your dream to go and you don't know when you will ever have another chance, do it!

Italy , all of Italy, is amazing! I have been to Venice, Rome, Florence (my favorite), and through Tuscany. Also, if you go to Napoli (Naples), you can take a boat to an island called Capri which is unbelieveable! We are going on a Royal Caribbean Meditteranean cruise, and made it a point to visit all of these locations. My airline ticket was $1300 for Augiust. Make note that a 4 star hotel in Italy is like a 2 star here. I'm guessing you may pay about $150/night but not completely sure. Just do some research online.
